Primavera Century

If You’ve never done a century and are looking for a good first century to try? Or you just want to get that first century of the season under your belt? Here’s a well-supported century, right in our backyard. Our friends to the south, the Fremont Freewheelers are holding their annual Primavera Century on April 20rd. You don’t have to drive for hours to get to the starting location, just head over to James Logan High School in Union City. The century has 6100 ft. of climbing and lots of great scenery. There are options for shorter rides with less climbing. Lots of food stops and a hot meal after the ride. Bill Carcot will be leading this ride for the Cherry City Cyclists.

Cherry Festival Bicycle Parking

The San Leandro Cherry Festival is scheduled for May 31st this year and the Cherry City Cyclist will be hosting the Free Valet Bicycle Parking, as we did last year. The City of San Leandro was very enthusiastic about our turn out last year, and we hope to make this an annual event. Last year we parked 80 bikes, and the convenience and security we offered to cyclist was much appreciated. We expect many more riders this year. We hope you can spare a couple of hours or schedule a bike ride where you can spend some time helping to park bikes and meeting fellow cyclists, and then maybe enjoying some of the activities at the Festival.

4 nights, 5 days June 27 to June 30
Hot Air Balloons & Bike Rides

Experience the Hot Air Balloon Festival on June 28th or June 29th and include a CCC Bike Ride and make it a get away in the wine country of the Alexander Valley north of Santa Rosa. You can rendezvous for one or multiple days. The hub is at the WorldMark Windsor Resort in Windsor June 26-June 30 where some of us will be staying. Though the rides are staged (see ride descriptions) this is a fluid event where there are options to shorten a route, lots of alternates to extend and a facility to enjoy.

For our viewing pleasure, the balloons are scheduled to launch each morning at 6:30 a.m. from Keiser Park 700 Windsor River Road. If you would like to do this together, call for the resort room number. We’ll be leaving from WorldMark at 6 a.m. to see about 30 balloons slated to launch. There will be a group leaving from WorldMark to go to the event on Saturday and Sunday at the same time. The park is close by. Some will ride to the park while others will drive or even walk.

There is a bike ride scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday from Café Noto and Sunday from WorldMark. We’ll be entertained by a lot of activities this time of the year in and around the vineyards, ride and experience as much of it as you like. You can pick a day of rest, relaxation, hang by the pool, read a book, visit the area and how can one pass up a visit to a local winery (ies?). There will be a wine/cheese potluck dinner on Saturday, the 28th. You can drop off your dishes at the resort in the morning.

If you would like to use the pool or hot tub during the day or after the ride, bring your own towels and toiletries. You can also arrange to shower and if needed use the refrigerator. Thursday, June 26 is a century from SF to Windsor. Please make arrangements for your transportation back. You need to self sufficient. There will be places on the route to refuel. Make sure you carry at least two bottles of water, food, $, tubes and a pump. Contact Vicky for a possible carpool.

For more info on the Balloon Festival visit: http://www.schabc.org/comingsoon.html or Google Hot Air Balloon in Windsor, CA.

Directions to WorldMark (north of Santa Rosa): Take 101 north exit at Shiloh, left at Shiloh Rd to 1251 Shiloh Rd Park outside the complex in the back or by the golf course. Guests who are staying at WorldMark are excluded. Allow at least 1.5-2 hrs drive time.

Windmill Century

This is a beautiful metric (or full 100 mile if you choose) century through the vineyards and valleys of northern Santa Barbara County. This is an amazing course as it contains an unbelievable amount of downhill. There is only 2000 feet of climbing in the metric century. Join us for the metric century by meeting at the registration tables at Los Alamos County Park at 7:30 AM.

Route information, directions, registration, and everything you need to know is located on the Tailwinds Bike Club web site at http://www.tailwindsbc.org/WindMill/default.htm. Register now as the ride is limited to 500 riders.

Contact the ride leader for information on where to stay (There are no hotels in Los Alamos. We stay in Santa Maria which is 18 miles north of Los Alamos.) Santa Maria is 263 miles south of San Francisco (about a 4.5 hour drive on Hwy 101). Ride leader: Mike Lynch, lynchmf1@comcast.net, or cell 510-209-0386.

Saturday, October 25  4/S/100

Meet by Starbuck’s in the Lucky parking lot at corner of Mowry Ave & Blacow Rd in Fremont at 6:30am.  (Exit Hwy 880 at Mowry Ave – head east into Fremont)  Since its late in the year, lights may be needed for the beginning of the ride.  We will leave at 7:00am.  We will stop at several Union 76 stations along the way for bathroom breaks.  There will be a coffee stop in Morgan Hill.  Lunch will be in Watsonville after the only substantial climb of the day (Hecker Pass).  The ride ends at Asilomar (registration building) in Pacific Grove.  Be prepared to feed and hydrate yourself (bring supplies or buy along the way).

You will need to find your own way home.  Have someone drive down to get you or plan on riding back on Sunday.  If you plan on riding back tomorrow, stay at Asilomar or find another motel nearby.  Contact me if you want to know who else is coming in order to coordinate a ride home or find a roommate if you are staying overnight.
